It was a pride moment once the metropolis Solid Waste Management Improvement Project received a world award within the urban solid waste management class at the C40 Mayors’ Summit control in Ciudad de Mexico on Gregorian calendar month one for its distinctive and effective solid waste management programme focusing on segregation of waste at supply. The spectacular work done by the 163-year-old Uttarpara-Kotrung municipality helped the project win this award. Uttarpara may be a community with a population of 1.9 lakh and also the municipality there has done a good job of turning waste into wealth. Before the project began, the city had soaring mounds of garbage that junction rectifier to contamination and destruction of water bodies, aquatic life, animal life, etc. Today, all the waste in Uttarpara is divided at supply and is collected by municipal employees on a daily basis. perishable and non-biodegradable waste is unbroken in separate chambers of the van and drop individually at the transfer centres. it's here that the non-biodegradable waste is hold on and compressed in compactor machines and later drop at landfill sites. The municipality provides rag pickers with masks, gloves, gumboots, and uniforms. A compost plant converts all the perishable waste into bio-manure. The plant has the capability to supply ten tonnes of manure on a daily basis. This manure is sold over the counter and through promoting agents. At present, the municipal body collects 12-14 tonnes of waste on a daily basis and produces 3-4 tonnes of manure daily. The Uttarpara municipality collects waste from the sewerage system still, using suction cum jetting machines. “We have a thought to hide all drains across the city,” aforesaid civic chief Dilip Yadav, UN agency received the award in Ciudad de Mexico.
